Five years ago, Angeley Crawford Gibb boldly shared a story about what life was like growing up Afro-Costa Rican. Since then, her story has garnered over a million views across platforms along with features in Latina Magazine, For Harriet, Upworthy, and the Huffington Post.
The witnessing was important. Angeley’s story hinted at the breadth of Blackness that exists globally. Conversations emerged in comment sections where assumptions were challenged, and nuance was realized. But the beauty of Angeley’s story lied in the anecdotes shared by Afro-Latinos throughout the diaspora who felt seen in her voice and drew power from her words.
Recognizing the need to provide a space for those with similar stories - one that is rooted in collective healing, one that centers joy, one that is conducive to a truthful exploration of self -- “Naming Ourselves In Love and In Liberation: A Love Story to Black Latin American Women” was born.
